Whoever stumbled upon the formula for Lego was surely some sort of higher being; the scope for fun with Lego is limited only by the confines of the imagination. Build a little piece of fantasy, be it a town, a robot, or a racing car and then play with it until staging an elaborate scene where the said article meets its end in a fountain of scattered bricks disappearing to their final dusty resting place under a couch, bed or fridge. It was like a toy you could break without getting into trouble and the endless cycle of build destroy build destroy was positively hypnotic. Genius!

It is no surprise that Lego has proved such a popular subject matter for video games, not only do the bricks themselves present endless opportunities for inventive game design but like most real Lego creations the games amount to more than the sum of their parts. Why is this? Nostalgia; anyone who had a box of Lego bricks as a kid cannot help but be seduced by the potent reverie elicited by the cheerful toyland shades and the familiar pimpled blocks bouncing around on screen. The coupling of the Lego toys with the Star Wars franchise - another fondly remembered childhood staple for those born in the 70’s and 80’s - is surely one of the most calculated pairings in gaming history. As such the Lego games have appealed to adults taking a walk down memory lane as much as they have to children still on the first wave of the Lego thrill.

It is perhaps a logical step then, that the Lego brand is to be given its own MMO, a traditionally very adult oriented genre. NetDevil (what is it with missing spaces these days) have signed on the dotted line to help the boffins at Lego design an MMO game that is rumoured to be in a similar caste to Second Life. The idea is that the player will build their own space in the world out of Lego (duh) but there are also going to be some more traditionally structured gaming elements to enjoy. It is certainly a brave move but given Lego’s track record for consistently polished games despite utilizing a range of developers, this new title (which as of yet is without an official name) due in 2008 could end up being something of a zenith for retro chique in forward thinking games.
