NEW YORK
Shares of Electronic Arts Inc. shot up in heavy trading Wednesday amid rumors that Microsoft Corp. is eyeing the video game publisher -- but Microsoft quickly denied the speculation.
Spokesman David Dennis said Microsoft has "no plans to purchase Electronic Arts."
A representative for Redwood City, Calif.-based EA could not immediately be reached for comment Wednesday afternoon. EA, which has a market cap of about $6.4 billion, is known for games such as the "Madden" series and "The Sims."
Trip Chowdhry, an analyst with Global Equities Research, said such a deal is "not going to happen."
Microsoft, he said, is focusing on the success of Windows 7 and other upcoming Windows products.
"None of our contacts see (EA) on Microsoft's radar screen," the analyst said.
EA's shares rose $1.31, or 7.1 percent, to $19.83. Trading volume was 27.2 million, compared with the average 8.1 million.
Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft's shares fell 5 cents to close at $25.72.
